Are Slot Machines the Answer to the State’s Budget Woes?
Editorial, “Gambling Won’t Solve Budget Woes,” Findlay Courier, 19 June 2003.
Today’s editorial by the Findlay Courier highlights the truly remarkable resiliency of the proposal to place video lottery terminals (slot machines) at Ohio racetracks.
A few months ago, the idea was to allow the voters of Ohio to decide whether to keep a general sales tax increase, or to install VLT’s at racetracks as a partial solution to the state’s budget deficit. Since that time, proposals have been floated to have slot machine profits benefit education, send children to college and now to buy prescription drugs. The deal keeps getting sweeter.
