Strickland Supports Bill to Increase Insurance Premiums

Thursday, September 13th, 2007 By Marc Kilmer

Yesterday Governor Strickland came out in support of legislation mandating that health insurance sold in Ohio cover diabetes treatment. This may sound like worthwhile legislation (after all, who can be against treating diabetes?), but by forcing insurance companies to carry yet another service it has the effect of raising insurance rates for all Ohioans.

For a governor who supports expanding government health care because, he says, middle class Ohioans cannot afford health insurance, it makes little sense for him to support legislation that will raise insurance prices. Of course, one of the Governor’s early priorities was pushing for mandated mental health parity, so apparently he does not see the connection.

Just remember the Governor’s support of legislation that will raise health insurance prices the next time you hear him lamenting the inability of middle class families to afford health care.
