Never have to work again

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 By Mike Maurer

Ah, economic development.

Speaker Jon Husted is braggin’ it up over bringing the bacon home to Dayton. $1.5 million here, $2.5 million there, pretty soon you’re talkin’ real money.

I have a little problem with the numbers, though: “Calamityville Tactical and Austere Lab Environments, $3 million, expected to help create 300 jobs. Wright State University is a partner.”

When I was a kid, I worked with a guy named Jerry. Jerry wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but he drove a pretty nice car, a hopped up, not-too-old Camaro, probably a solid $6,000 to $10,000. (And them’s 1980 dollars; I suppose it’d be three times that today.) Jerry and I were talking to a friend who had been in a car accident, and one of the claims involved was loss of consortium. Jerry wanted to know what that was, and we described it as the loss of sex.

“Man,” Jerry said, “if that ever happened to me, I’d sue ‘em for ten thousand dollars and never have to work again.”

So here’s to the Speaker’s economic development chits. $3 million for 300 jobs, little bit of math, $10,000 per job. That’s some economic development.

Well, at least one Ohioan will never have to work again.
