Border Fence II
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 By Mike MaurerThis from the Tax Foundation blog is chokingly funny. Apparently a clever fellow in California wants to impose an “exit tax,” that would “penalize people who leave the state by seizing 55% of assets exceeding $20 million.”
Oh, my goodness. I wonder how much moolah Ohio could have raked in if it had arrested Howard Metzenbaum at the border on his way to Florida?
This is just too funny. Someday, I’m sure, and much sooner than we’ll all like, there will be a world government that is without borders. Doubtless Paul Pfeifer wouldn’t mind being in charge of it. When we have that, it’ll be possible to tax wealth at any rate governments choose, presumably 100 percent, if not the old college try 110 percent.
Until then, however, this isn’t a formula for tax collections. It’s a formula for poverty.
