Reactionaries are not effective entrepreneurs
Monday, September 29th, 2008 By James NesbittAs I discovered several hours ago (and the AP recently reported), inquisitive citizens attempting to access information on the U.S. House of Representatives website are currently confronted with a blank, white page (unless you are lucky). After some initial frustration, I found it to be an interesting example of why government should not be allowed to interfere with the economy; its woefully inadequate ability to predict and plan for the future makes it ineffective at success in the marketplace. Today’s vote in the House and the interest it sparked was easily foreseeable. The vote was scheduled and provided ample time to provide the necessary infrastructure for the web traffic it would generate. The interest the vote has attracted should have been no surprise, given the ramifications of the bill. The visionaries that are the marks of successful organizations would have obtained more bandwidth, removed pictures and other bandwidth-sapping content, and developed a contingency plan should the high volume of traffic they expected overload their servers. The bureaucrats in charge of the House website, however, failed to do all this. If government can’t do something as simple as plan for website traffic, why should one expect it to lead the financial industry of this country back to health?
