“I Know What’s Best for Me”

Amazingly, the Cleveland Plain Dealer published a column yesterday that doesn’t blindly repeat the “payday lenders are the devil” mantra that emanates from the paper’s editorial board. Columnist Phillip Morris went out and actually talked to peoople who use payday loans. Did he find the ignorant borrowers who desperately take loans in desperation? No, he found intelligent people who were making a financial choice that was rational to them. As one borrower said, “These people give me a service I need. I know what’s best for me.” It’s too bad that Ohio’s policymakers feel differently.
