Taxed & Confused: The Buckeye Institute Joins Panel Making Sense of Rising Property Taxes in Ohio
May 15, 2025Columbus, OH – Surprised by your recent property tax bill? You might not be alone. Ohio ranks 13th in the nation for local tax rates, and as property values rise, many regional homeowners are feeling a pinch. While Ohio schools take a big slice of tax revenues, property taxes also fund a long list of other services.
But what’s driving property tax increases? Where exactly does the money go? Can something be done to help ease the blow to Ohio property owners?
Greg R. Lawson, a research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, joined the Columbus Metropolitan Club’s Forum “Taxed & Confused: Making Sense of Rising Property Taxes in Ohio” to discuss property taxes in Ohio. The panel also featured Michael D. Cole, president of the Columbus City School Board; Michael Stinziano, Franklin County auditor; and was moderated by Anna Staver, state government and politics reporter with Cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer.
From restructuring policies to rethinking tax breaks, the panel breaks down Ohio’s property tax puzzle with a look at who pays, who benefits, and what happens next.
