Columbus, OH – The Buckeye Institute is pleased to announce its new economist, Hugo Diaz, Ph.D., who recently joined the organization after many years in academia. Diaz will conduct original research and dynamic economic modeling—specifically examining how taxing and spending decisions affect businesses, workers, families, jobs, economic indicators, and state revenues.

“Hugo will apply rigorous, data-driven, analytic expertise to consequential public policy questions facing Ohio and other states,” said Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute. “His insights will no doubt sharpen our understanding of how budgetary and regulatory decisions ripple throughout the economy. We are proud to welcome him to The Buckeye Institute’s small and close-knit team.”

Diaz earned his Ph.D. and master’s degrees in economics from George Mason University as well as another master’s degree in international relations from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia. Before pursuing his doctoral studies, Diaz spent more than a decade teaching and serving in leadership roles at several universities where he taught courses in international business and foreign affairs and oversaw academic programs and staff.

“The combination of technical skill, academic credentials, and firsthand experience makes Hugo a tremendous addition to our already outstanding economic research team,” said Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of Buckeye’s Economic Research Center and vice president of policy at The Buckeye Institute. “We particularly look forward to his timely work impacting the most pressing public policy debates in Ohio and other states across the country.”
