Ohio House Committee Adopts The Buckeye Institute Recommendations To Cut Occupational Licensing Burdens

Nov 14, 2023

Columbus, OH – Greg R. Lawson, a research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, commented on The Buckeye Institute-championed recommendations included in the Occupational License Review Report, which the Ohio House State and Local Government Committee adopted.

“The report adopted by the Ohio House State and Local Government Committee embraces 20 Buckeye Institute recommendations to eliminate and reduce burdensome occupational licensing requirements. If the entire General Assembly embraces these recommendations, more barriers to work will be removed, and it will be easier to earn a living in Ohio.

“Particularly important are changes reducing burdens on cosmetologists, a profession where change has long been needed, and eliminating the two-year post-secondary education requirement for real estate brokers, which was out of step with all of Ohio’s neighboring states.

“The Buckeye Institute applauds the work of Chair Marilyn John and the members of the committee for their leadership in this session’s review process. Future committees tasked with this work should follow their excellent example.”
