The Buckeye Institute Applauds Ohio Senate for Prioritizing Criminal Justice & Sentencing Reform

Feb 12, 2019

Columbus, OH – Today, the Ohio Senate, led by President Larry Obhof, announced its priorities for the 2019 legislative session. Among those priorities is criminal justice reform and specifically the need for sentencing reform for low-level drug offenses.

“Today’s announcement that criminal justice reform and sentencing reform are a priority for the Ohio Senate is good news for Ohio and Ohioans. Senate President Larry Obhof and Senator John Eklund should be commended for their continued commitment to passing smart criminal justice policies that have helped Ohioans suffering from addiction and mental illness receive the help they need rather than a prison sentence,” said Daniel J. Dew, legal fellow at The Buckeye Institute and an expert in criminal justice reform policy. “The Buckeye Institute applauds the Senate for its willingness to tackle such an important topic and we look forward to working with members on these critical reforms and to finding research-based solutions to an epidemic that has claimed the lives of too many.”

Over the past eight years, Ohio policymakers have taken important steps to improve the criminal justice system by encouraging local rehabilitation efforts, and removing barriers for those trying to turn their lives around. Today’s announcement signals their intent to continue those reforms.

“We applaud Senate President Obhof, Senator Eklund and their colleagues for making drug sentencing and justice reform a priority. Their agenda’s focus on helping people with addiction and providing pathways to redemption for people with a past conviction is critical for Ohio. These principles are an important start to reforms that can improve the health, safety, and economic outlook for Ohio communities. We stand willing to work and assist in any way to pass meaningful reform to save lives and improve Ohio,” said Robert Rooks, vice president for the Alliance for Safety and Justice.

The Buckeye Institute is working with a coalition of groups and individuals, including the Alliance for Safety and Justice, dedicated to improving Ohio’s criminal justice system.
