The Buckeye Institute: Buckeye Recommendations Improve House Bill 6, but Taxpayer-Funded Bailout Remains Bad Policy

Jun 27, 2019

Columbus, OH – Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute, issued the following statement on the Senate version of House Bill 6.

“In its version of House Bill 6, the Ohio Senate wisely adopted two of The Buckeye Institute's  recommendations: reducing the surcharges utility customers will be forced to pay to subsidize the failing Perry and Davis-Besse nuclear power plants, and auditing FirstEnergy Solutions to ensure subsidies cover only shortfalls and do not generate profits for the company.”

“Lest there be any misunderstanding, though, The Buckeye Institute strongly opposes any government (i.e. taxpayer) bailout for any company in any industry at any time for any reason.”

“However, if the legislature proceeds with such an ill-advised bailout, it would need to be further improved by 1) mandating that an audit be completed prior to—rather than after—any subsidies to FirstEnergy Solutions and 2) completely eliminating the job-killing renewable energy standards.”
