The Buckeye Institute Reacts to Governor DeWine’s Proposed Budget

Feb 01, 2023

Columbus, OH – Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center and vice president of policy at The Buckeye Institute, commented on Governor Mike DeWine’s proposed 2024-2025 budget.

“Governor Mike DeWine’s budget blueprint contains many laudable ideas to make Ohio a more prosperous state, including a significant expansion of school choice. By increasing the eligibility for the EdChoice scholarship to 400 percent of poverty, Ohio will put students first and empower families to choose the education setting that is best for their children. The governor not only invests in improving Ohio’s K-12 education system, but also proposes innovative ways to help the higher education community improve its ability to develop a 21st century workforce that can take advantage of new job opportunities and build a thriving economy.

“There are also areas of concern in the proposed budget. The General Assembly should act cautiously on proposals to spend $2.5 billion on economic development infrastructure and the numerous new proposals on housing and mental health. While each idea has merit, the General Assembly must prioritize spending in a way that does not foreclose the ability to enact meaningful, pro-growth tax reform that treats all Ohioans and businesses fairly.”
