Major business group gives thumbs down to energy mandate

Greg R. Lawson Sep 24, 2016

A new report from the Ohio Business Roundtable, an organization composed of CEOs from many of Ohio’s leading companies, pours damp water on those seeking a continuation of the present renewable energy “freeze” that has been in effect in Ohio for the last two years.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

…[T]he report's authors also believe the state should do away with mandates requiring power companies to offer more and more green power over the next decade. Those mandates are now frozen but set to come back Jan. 1, and a political battle is already shaping up for the end of the year that could see Gov. Kasich veto a proposed permanent freeze.

"…If legislation or mandates forced greater adoption of renewables, power prices would rise," the report argues.

The Buckeye Institute echoes those general findings and has long called for the elimination of renewable mandates citing the increased costs they represent to Ohio consumers. We testified before the Energy Study Mandate Committee and our own Joe Nichols has published several reports (here and here) on this issue.

If the General Assembly does not act by the end of the year, the current renewable standards will go back into effect and begin to cost Ohioans more for their energy.
