On June 27, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 to prohibit public-employee labor unions from collecting “agency” or “fair share” fees, overturning a 41-year-old precedent. At the time, the ruling in the case of Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 31, was thought to have broad implications for education.

The Thomas B. Fordham Institute hosted an important conversation on the implications of Janus in Ohio and how it is likely to impact education. The discussion featured Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute; Melissa Cropper, president of the Ohio Federation of Teachers; and was moderated by Chad L. Aldis, vice president for Ohio policy and advocacy at the Fordham Institute.

The Buckeye Institute filed amicus briefs in support of Mark Janus in Janus v. AFSCME, and was the first organization in the country to file lawsuits calling for an end to compelled exclusive representation by unions. With cases in Ohio, Minnesota, and Maine, The Buckeye Institute is leading the fight to recognize workers’ First Amendment rights.

The Buckeye Institute’s Workers Choose campaign gives public employees the tools they need to express their newly recognized First Amendment rights.
