The Buckeye Institute: States Should be Able to Enact Commonsense Health Care Reforms

Aug 20, 2018

Columbus, OH – The Buckeye Institute’s Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center and vice president of policy, submitted public comments on behalf of Kentucky’s Group VIII Work Requirements and Community Engagement 1115 Waiver.

“As I recently wrote in The Hill, too often, the federal government has denied or unduly delayed requests from the states to allow them to enact commonsense health care reforms, and unfortunately, the federal judiciary has joined that effort,” said Rea S. Hederman Jr., co-author of Returning Health Care Power to the States. “With the court’s ruling in the Kentucky case, one more roadblock has been put in the way of states, including Ohio, to gain the flexibility they need to ensure their citizens can have healthy and prosperous lives.”

The implementation of Kentucky’s waiver, which was initially approved by Health and Human Services, was halted following a decision by U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg. This court decision has delayed the review of other waiver applications, including Ohio’s, which Hederman called “the first step in Ohio repairing its broken health insurance market.”

Hederman’s public comments on Kentucky’s wavier were submitted on Friday, August 17, 2018. He submitted public comments on Ohio’s work and community engagement waiver on March 16, 2018.
